Becks’s house on the market

Despite house prices plummeting by more than 10% in less than a year, one modest terraced house in an uninspiring East London suburb is defying the gloomy economic outlook – by going on sale for an eye-popping £850,000.

The reason? Well, this is no ordinary house. It’s actually the three-bedroom childhood home of one David Beckham, and the owners are crossing their fingers that when word gets out, the sale price could top £1m.

Local historian Colin Evans is the man credited with discovering the house’s showbiz secret, and has been handsomely rewarded with the job of selling the place. “When I told the owners, the didn’t believe me,” he bragged.

A similar house in the same street in Leytonstone would usually go for around £250,000, but the Beckham connection has seen its value go through the roof. Young David lived at the house with his mum Sandra and dad Ted before they later moved up the road to equally glamorous Chingford.

"Lucky leafy Leytonstone. Celebrity hotspot,” trills the estate agent’s blurb. “London's answer to Hollywood.” Now that’s pushing it a bit…
